The Prison Law department at instaLaw is one of the biggest in the UK and we are able to take instructions from inmates across all prisons in England and Wales.

We are regularly instructed by criminal firms who do not hold a prison law contract in order to help assist their clients. We do not hold a general crime contract and as such we can represent clients from numerous firms on a neutral basis.

Our team has well in excess of 50 years combined experience meaning that your case will be in safe hands.

At instaLaw we are well versed in all areas of the prison system and prison law in general.

We have gained an excellent reputation for the representation of life sentence and IPP inmates who are facing indeterminate sentences.

Many of the cases we deal with have been very high profile, attracting national media attention.

We have been invited to contribute to several radio station programmes and regularly contribute articles to the national prison newspapers. We are also members of the Association of Prison Lawyers.

We have assisted hundreds of people in relation to all manner of different prison law cases. Our repeated instructions are testament to our focus on client care.

Our judicial review specialists in the Public Law department work closely with the Prison Law Department to challenge irrational and unfair decisions.

In scenarios where clients are worried about funding, legal aid may be able to cover the cost of representation.

Such cases include:

  • Life sentence prisoners; paper and oral hearings
  • IPP inmates; paper and oral hearings
  • All other oral hearings covered
  • Extended sentence / EDS inmates; paper and oral hearings
  • Pre-tariff reviews
  • Recall cases; paper and oral hearings
  • Independent adjudications
  • CAT A reviews
  • Complex sentence calculations

  • In all other cases, we are able to offer a competitive fixed fee quotation. Under such an arrangement we can cover:

  • Prison transfer requests
  • Recategorisation reviews
  • Governor adjudication representations
  • Oasys report challenges
  • Prison complaints
  • IEP appeals
  • DPA / Security / NOMIS record requests
  • Ad hoc correspondence

  • In some circumstances we may also be able to assist inmates with the following:

  • Personal injury as a result of prison or inmate negligence
  • Data protection claims
  • Probation negligence
  • Unlawful detention claims

  • Get in touch with one of our team on 01782 560155 or via email at if you would like to check whether you are eligible for public funding. If you are not eligible, we can advise you about our private funding arrangements, including fixed fees.
